Royal College Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Accreditation


Accreditation Services

The Canadian Critical Care Society (CCCS) is an accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provider under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. As such, the CCCS is qualified to review and accredit CPD programs that have been developed or co-developed by physician organizations for credits under Section 1 (group learning) or Section 3 (self-assessment programs or simulation based assessment programs) of the Royal College's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. The CCCS CPD committee is composed of physicians with an in-depth knowledge of the MOC program.


Before Applying

Preparations should begin at least 3 months in advance. Plan to apply at least 12 weeks prior to the event to ensure that there is sufficient time for both the accreditation review and event promotion. Credits cannot be advertised prior to the approval.


Eligibility

To be eligible for accreditation, an activity must be:


1. Developed or co-developed with a physician organization

Has your program been developed by a physician organization?

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada requires that activities must be planned by a physician organization to be eligible for accreditation or activities planned by non-physician organizations must be co-developed by a physician organization or an accredited provider. The application form must be completed by a member of the physician organization that developed or co-developed this event.


If you are uncertain whether your organization meets the definition of physician organization, please review the Royal College’s definition or contact the Royal College CPD Department (cpd@royalcollege.ca or 613-730-2587) to confirm your status before submitting your application.


Examples of physician organizations

Examples of non-physician organizations

  • faculties of medicine
  • hospital departments or divisions
  • medical societies
  • medical associations
  • medical academies
  • physician research organizations
  • health authorities not linked to government agencies
  • Canadian provincial/territorial medical regulatory authorities (MRAs)
  • disease-oriented patient advocacy organizations (e.g. Canadian Diabetes Association)
  • government departments or agencies (e.g. Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada)
  • medical education or communications (MEC) companies (e.g. CME Inc.)
  • for-profit online educators, publishing companies or simulation companies (e.g. Medscape, CAE)
  • small groups of physicians working together to develop educational programming

2. Planned to meet the Royal College's accreditation activity standards,

The national standard for support of accredited CPD activities guides the ability of accredited CPD providers and other parties in Canada to:
- safeguard high-quality CPD from commercial influence,
- outline a clearly defined role for sponsors of CPD activities, and
- standardize the development and delivery of CPD activities for both family physicians and specialist physician audiences.

3. and Reviewed by the CCCS as a Royal College accredited CPD provider.

About the Association

The Canadian Critical Care Society (CCCS) is the National Specialty Society, representing Adult and Paediatric Critical Care Medicine physicians in Canada. The practice of Critical Care Medicine in Canada is multidisciplinary and CCCS members hold base specialty certification in anaesthesia, medicine, paediatrics, emergency medicine or surgery and some surgical subspecialties such as cardiac surgery and neurosurgery.
